Can the Feds keep a tax refund..if your student loan isn't paid?

My daughter is a single mother and has a very small income and received an EIC when she filed for 2008..the Feds kept it all..because of a student loan in default..is there anything that can be done about this?

Payoff the student loans.

If the loans are in default, there is nothing that you can do to get the refund back. It, and all future refunds, will be seized until the loan is paid off.

Can they keep your refund? Yes, they can, and as you have seen, they will.

Can anything be done about this? Um, you mean other than paying off the loan?

Nope. Until her student loan is either paid off or kept current with payments, they will keep her income tax refunds and any other federal monies until it is paid. I am very sory

The IRS will keep all tax refunds until all student loans are paid off. They handle these situations as they handle unpaid child support and unpaid federal taxes.
